An Up Close Look at Some Civil War Veterans

I thought I’d follow up on yesterday’s post and DUVCW Tent 23 photo. Please take a moment to read the post and look at the entire photo here. I’m so taken by the veterans sitting proudly in the front row of the photo I thought I’d add some close ups of the men in today’s post.

Look at their medals worn with honor! I especially like that the man on the right has his uniform on.

The man on the right in this photo not only has his uniform on but also his hat! I mentioned yesterday that his daughter or granddaughter lovingly has her hand on his shoulder. In this up close view there are two hands on his shoulders.

These men are well into their eighties but I’ll bet they came together to remember fallen comrades and honor their memory.

I don’t know who the lady is. Perhaps the tent’s first president? But even today our members have the same medals for Tent President, Dept. President, etc.

If you can help me identify any of the men, the medals or uniforms I would appreciate it! Please leave me a comment! Thanks!

One of the oldest and maybe most prized possession of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861 – 1865, Lizabeth A. Turner, Tent 23 is the photo above. Actual daughters and granddaughters of Civil War veterans who are seated in the front row. Dated Oct. 23, 1928 with D of U V across the top this photo taken in front of Memorial Hall. I especially love the daughter (or granddaughter) who lovingly has her hand on her veteran’s shoulder.

Although none of the people in this photo are named I have to think one or some of these gents belonged to the local GAR Mart Armstrong Post No. 202. I’ll just bet some of these men I’ve listed in my many posts as I’ve transcribed the 1908 roster.

Here’s the final page of membership for the GAR’s Mart Armstrong Post No. 202.

Roster – 1908 GAR Roster Mart Armstrong Post No. 202

In case you haven’t caught my blog posts these past couple days I’m transcribing a local GAR Roster from 1908. I found the Roster in the papers of the Daughters of Union Veterans 1861-1865 Lizabeth A. Turner, Tent 23, of which I’m a member. The GAR held their encampment in Lima, Ohio in 1908. I’m guessing that would be the reason for printing this roster.

So let’s take a look at some of the guys on the roster from G to L:

When I’m through transcribing the entire Roster I’m going to tally the regiments and see which ones had the most veterans who were members of this post. Not exactly scientific but a representation of the community at the time. Already by far the 81st OVI has the most veterans. I was aware that the 81st was the regiment of this area but didn’t realize how big. The 81st OVI deserves some big time research as I look into my local Civil War history!

After a wonderful holiday weekend I’m back to transcribing a local GAR Roster from 1908. I found the Roster in the papers of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865, Lizabeth A. Turner, Tent 23. I’m a member and have access to this fabulous genealogical info! The GAR held their encampment in Lima, Ohio in 1908. So that’s probably the reason for printing this roster.

Mart Armstrong is the name of the GAR Post and it was No. 202.

So today we’re getting the veteran’s names and regiments as listed on page 2 of the roster:

Conner, George – Co. D 54 OVI

Custar, Jacob – Co. A 151 OVI

Carr, Solomon – Co. E 180 OVI

Clausing, Theodore – Co. K 56 OVI

Clutter, D. W. – Co. G 71 OVI

Clark, Alva – Co. A 49 OVI

Dickason, John – Co. F 9 O V Cav

Downing, S. D. – Co. L 50 N.Y.V.I.

Dukeman, A – Co. F 125 OVI

Daniels, R. F. – Co. M 10 OVI

Drew, Solomon – Co B 118 OVI

Frushey, Calvin – Co. K 66 ILL.V.I.

Foster, T. E. – Co. C 151 OVI

Furguson, Samuel – Co. F 4 O. V. Cal

Fisher, Chas – Co. I 46 OVI

Faurot, Wm. N. – Co. C 129 OVI

Feeman, Robert – Co. C 102 OVI

Goldsmith, Joseph – Co. A 15 OVI

Garner, Wm. V. – Co. E 81 OVI

Now something cool for me in doing the transcribing is the side notes I scribble down to eventually follow up on. Faurot is a well-known surname of one of this city’s prominent citizens of the late 19th century. So, was William Faurot a brother to Benjamin Faurot? I’ll have to check it out!

I recognize the name John Charter from my work with the 4th OVC. but this John Charters  was a veteran of the 43 OVI. I want to do some research and see if he reenlisted with another regiment.

Finally one of my Van Meter’s, George S. was killed during the war serving with the 9th OVC. Could John Dickason, Co. F 9th OVC help me out with my research on George S. Van Meter?

It’s pretty neat how I’m benefiting with new research ideas from doing some transcribing that I hoped would eventually help someone else in their family history research!

Finally – What You’ve Been Waiting For!! The Men of Post No. 202!

The Mart Armstrong GAR Post No. 202 was 26 years old in 1908 and named for the first Lima soldier to be killed in the Civil War. Mart Armstrong died at the Battle of Shiloh April 6, 1862.

The one thing I’ve kept in mind as I transcribed these names is that each one of these men were veterans. They fought in the Civil War which had ended 43 years earlier. These guys were in their 60s and 70s. It must have been really important for them to be a member of the GAR.

In today’s page we’re getting to the actual roster of men in this GAR post. Their names and regiments are listed with my thanks to them for serving:
