Did Your Civil War Ancestor Have to Provide His Own Drawers?

FBGenCircleLogo1The answer is yes and no. Both Union and Confederate soldiers were issued underclothes once they enlisted. Those underclothes included drawers, socks and undershirts.

Of course those were also the articles of clothing that received the most sweat and stains. Soldiers found they needed to replace these items more frequently than their government did. So they were also the most requested clothing by soldiers from home.
